Women’s Soccer: Scots Fall to St. Olaf in MIAC Battle

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team dropped a MIAC match at home to St. Olaf College, 4-1 Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The result gives the Scots a 6-8 record overall and a 4-4 mark in conference play, while the Oles improve to 10-2-3, 6-2 MIAC.

St. Olaf got on the scoreboard early in the match, as Roxanne Rundles hit a ball from the left side about 30 yards out that bounced off the cross bar, deflected off senior goalkeeper Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) and went into the goal in the third minute of the game. In the 38th minute, Macalester pulled even. Senior forward Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) forced a turnover by an Ole defender and deflected the ball right to first year forward Ellen Fischer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon Campus), who blasted a shot into the goal from 15 yards out. It was Fischer's first career goal as a Scot.

A little over five minutes later, Lillian Miller shot the ball off of Heuga's hands and into the goal to regain the one-goal lead just before halftime. Less than four minutes after the break, Emily Johnson scored off an assist by Emma Boyle, then found the net again in the 53rd minute, finishing a pass from Wren VanDeWalker for a commanding 4-1 advantage. Johnson came into the match leading the NCAA Division III in goals and now has 21 goals on the season.

The Scots played well but were unable to answer the second-half outburst despite holding a 12-10 edge in shots taken for the match. Heuga finished with four saves for Macalester, while Charlotte Percy made four saves in goal for St. Olaf.

The Scots return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20 with another MIAC match at Carleton College. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
