ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus, 95-62 in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court. The Scots are now 6-11 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while the Gusties, who are ranked 14th in Division III, improve to 15-1, 7-0 MIAC.
Gustavus took control of the game early, outscoring Macalester 21-2 over the first 5:44 of the game. Senior forward
Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) scored four points and first year guard
Jamal Randle (St. Paul, Minn./Great River School) hit a three-pointer to bring the Scots to within 13, 25-12. But the Gusties pushed their lead up to as many as 25 points before taking a 46-22 advantage at the break. Gustavus shot 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from three-point range in the first half compared to 27.8 percent (5-of-18) for Macalester.
The Scots weren't able to cut into the Gusties' lead in the second half, as the hosts increased their advantage to 44 points before Macalester closed the game with a 15-4 run. First year forwards
Javier Diaz (Lake Oswego, Ore./Tualatin) and
Gabriel Sahely (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) each scored five points down the stretch, with Randle adding a three-pointer. The Scots shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 6-of-14 from three-point range, after halftime, only to have the Gusties shoot 51.4 percent overall and 52.6 percent from beyond the arc in the second half.
Shannon led Macalester with 15 points and three assists while making 6-of-8 from the floor. Randle went 3-of-6 from deep and finished with 12 points and four rebounds, while Sahely registered career highs of 11 points and four rebounds. First year guard
Lucas Myer (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School) grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Jake Schmitt paced Gustavus with 22 points.
The Scots host Concordia on Wednesday, Jan. 21 for another MIAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
