Baseball: Macalester Follows Narrow Loss with 12-7 Victory at St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team responded after a 3-2 loss in extra innings with a convincing 12-7 win in Game 2 of a MIAC twin bill Wednesday afternoon at Mark Almli Field. The Scots, who entered today's games riding a three-game winning streak, are now 11-20 overall and 4-12 in the conference. The Oles, who are third in the MIAC standings, are now 19-10, 10-4 MIAC.

In the first game, Macalester broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Scots loaded the bases on a single by first year Aram Dombalagian (Glenville, Ill./North Shore Country Day), a walk and a hit batter for sophomore Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School), who singled to plate Dombalagian and first year Bobby Munoz (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica). St. Olaf scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a homer by Breckin Hadley to make the score 2-1. In the bottom of the sixth, the Oles scored a run on a two-out hit that brought home the runner from second to tie the score at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, St. Olaf again delivered a single with a runner on second to score the game-winning run. Macalester had six hits, including two from Dombalagian, but stranded 11 baserunners in the loss. Senior pitcher Cam Scholl (Belmont, Calif./Carlmont) started and held St. Olaf to two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one.

The Scots didn't let the disappointing loss affect their performance in Game 2. Peacock led off the game with a single and advanced to second on an error. Junior Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) followed with a single to drive in Peacock for a quick 1-0 lead. After Paulsen stole second, sophomore Isaiah Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Northbrook) singled to plate Paulsen for a 2-0 advantage after just three batters. Macalester broke the game wide open in the top of the second inning with six runs on three hits, four walks and an error. Ramirez delivered a two-run single, first year Tristan Lander (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) drove in two runs, Dombalagian drew a bases-loaded walk and junior Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) singled home Dombalagian in the inning for an 8-0 lead.

After the Oles put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, junior Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) hit a sacrifice fly to score Paulsen and Dombalagian drove in Ramirez with a single for a 10-3 Macalester lead. St. Olaf scored three runs in the third and another in the fifth to make the score 10-7, but junior Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth for a 12-7 Scots' lead. Senior pitcher Jacob Posner (Los Angeles, Calif./Alexander Hamilton), who entered the game in the third inning, held the Oles to a walk and a single over the final two innings to close out the win. Posner allowed one run on three hits while fanning four and walking one over five innings to earn the win.

Ramirez led the Scots' bats with three hits, two runs and three RBIs in five at bats. Paulsen went 2-for-2 with three runs, an RBI and three walks, with Gumagay and junior Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) also registering two hits apiece.

Macalester hosts St. Scholastica on Tuesday, April 29 in a MIAC doubleheader. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
