ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat to the College of St. Scholastica in a MIAC dual Sunday afternoon at Hayden Tennis Courts. The Scots are now 8-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference, while the Saints improve to 8-6, 4-3 MIAC.
In doubles, Macalester's No. 1 doubles tandem of seniors
Liam Lynch (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and
Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) beat Jonas Abeleda and Eamon Gerrard-Stace, 8-5. Sophomore
Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) and first year
Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) came close at No. 2 doubles but lost to Alex Daignault and Reece Patten in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7-3).
All six singles matches went to a 10-point tie-breaker. Sargent beat Abeleda at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3, senior
Lucas Wood (Urbana, Ill./University Lab School) topped Dane Patten, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 2 singles, and senior
Owen Lindstrom (Hanover, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) defeated Reece Patten, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 at No. 5 singles. But the Saints earned wins at third, fourth and sixth singles to take the dual, with Jose Naranjo winning at No. 6 singles over Annes, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 to clinch the victory.
Following the dual, Macalester recognized its seniors Lindstrom, Lynch, Sargent, Wood and
Maxwell Davis (Warwick, Pa./Stone Independent School) as a part of Senior Day.
Macalester faces Bethel University on the road on Friday, April 25 in a MIAC dual. The first matches start at 4:30 p.m. in Arden Hills.
