TUCSON, Ariz. – In a morning game against familiar foes Augsburg University, the Macalester College baseball team rode the momentum from Monday's walk off into a 6-3 victory. This win in a non-conference matchup in the Tucson Invitational brings the Scots season record to 3-5.
Macalester started Wednesday's game hot with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) started the inning off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single from
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy). Jones stole second, setting himself up to score on a hit by
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) to make the game 2-0.
Scots starting pitcher
Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) fired a spotless first inning before running into trouble in the second. A single and a double put two on base before a fielding error scored both, recorded as unearned runs for King. After those two runs, King was untouchable for 7.0 frames, striking out nine batters and walking none. King only allowed five hits and one earned run, shutting down an Auggies offense that had been swinging the bats well in Arizona.
After Augsburg tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second, the Scots answered right back to take lead.
Bobby Munoz (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) got on base with a single and made his way around the bases to be scored by a Peacock RBI groundout. Macalester added one more in the third inning with Planko scoring on an RBI single from
Aram Dombalagian (Glenview, Ill./North Shore Country Day School) to make the game 4-2, a lead that wouldn't be lost.
The Scots scored twice more on two more RBI singles, first from Peacock to score
Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) and a second from Dombalagian scoring Planko. Fresh off scoring the winning run on Monday,
Isaiah Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Northbrook) came in to relieve King in the eighth inning and continued Macalester's pitching success, getting out of two jams. With a final score of 6-3, King earned his first win of the season (1-1) and Ramirez his first save.
The Scots play two games on Thursday, March 20 against UT Dallas and Wesleyan University.
