ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its first MIAC road game of the season on Saturday at Hamline University, losing 73-52 at Hutton Arena. The Scots are now 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while the Pipers improve to 4-2, 1-1 MIAC.
After getting baskets from junior guards
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) and
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) to open the game, Macalester surrendered 16 straight points and trailed 18-8 after one quarter. Sophomore guard
Emma Karlin (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) drained a three near the end of the quarter. The Scots pulled to within eight early in the second quarter after back-to-back baskets from first year guard
Megan Matthews (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and Karlin that made the score 20-12. But the Pipers outscored Macalester 20-8 over the final 7:11 to take a commanding 40-20 advantage at halftime. Hamline shot 50.0 percent from the field compared to 38.1 percent for the Scots in the first half.
Although the deficit was too much to overcome, Macalester played almost even with the Pipers over the final two quarters. Karlin and Smith each scored four points in the third quarter that saw Hamline hold a narrow 14-13 edge. In the fourth quarter, both teams tallied 19 points, with Matthews tallying seven points and Daley scoring six points for the Scots. Four of Daley's points came in a 10-1 Macalester run to close out the game. The Scots shot 46.2 percent from the field while holding Hamline to 38.5 percent shooting in the fourth quarter.
Daley finished with a team-leading 13 points to go with four steals, while Karlin contributed 12 points and four assists. Matthews notched nine points, and sophomore forward
Cady Davis (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt) grabbed a team-best five rebounds to go with five points and two steals. Macalester tied its season high with 13 steals on the day. Lauren Cooper scored 13 points to lead the Pipers.
The Scots play their final game of 2025 on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at home against Carleton. The MIAC contest begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
