Women’s Basketball: Macalester Drops Non-Conference Game at Minnesota Morris

MORRIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team traveled to face Minnesota Morris, which used a 25-point fourth quarter to win the non-conference game, 76-62 Monday night at Jim Gremmels Court. The Scots are now 0-2 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 1-2.

Early in the first quarter, three-pointers by first year guard Megan Matthews (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and sophomore guard Emma Karlin (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), plus a basket by junior guard Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) gave Macalester an 8-3 lead. An 11-2 run by Minn. Morris put the Cougars on top, 14-10 before a three by Karlin and a free throw from sophomore forward Samantha Smith (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) made the score 14-14 at the end of the quarter.

With the score tied at 23-23 with just under five minutes left in the first half, the Scots took control of the game with a 16-4 run to take a 39-27 advantage at the break. Daley and junior guard Acacia Edmond (Houston, Texas/Shadow Creek) each scored four points and junior guard Kendall Bernbaum (Dallas, Texas/Shelton School) made a three in the run, as Macalester shot 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from the field in the second quarter.

The Cougars battled back in the third, using a 19-6 run to regain the lead, 46-45 with three minutes left in the quarter. A three-pointer by Bernbaum briefly gave the lead back to the Scots, then Minn. Morris scored five straight points for a 51-48 advantage. With a minute left in the quarter, first year guard Faith Accardo (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian) made a free throw, then drained a three to put Macalester ahead, 52-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

Over the final 10 minutes, the Scots went cold and the host Cougars heated up, shooting 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the field compared to 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) for Macalester. Minn. Morris scored the first five points of the quarter to open with a 15-3 run for a commanding 66-54 lead. The Scots came as close as 10 points the rest of the way, as the Cougars led by as many as 17 points before Accardo closed out the scoring with a three-pointer.

For the game Macalester shot 37.3 percent from the field but made 10-of-30 from three-point range. Matthews had a team-best 13 points to go with four rebounds, while Karlin hit 4-of-9 from beyond the arc en route to 12 points. Daley finished with seven points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals, with sophomore forward Cady Davis (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt) adding seven points, five boards and three steals. Accardo registered eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior forward Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) registered three blocks to bolster the defense. The Cougars' Maddy Grove led all players with 21 points.

The Scots return home to host Buena Vista University in a non-conference game on Friday, Nov. 14. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
