Softball: Scots Split on Last Day in Florida, Head North with 7-3 Record

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team closed out its Spring Break Trip to THE Spring Games in Florida with a win over Lawrence University, 15-5 and a loss to Utica University, 9-0 Friday at Legends Way Ballfields. The Scots compiled a record of 7-3 in Florida to improve to 11-5 overall on the season.

In the win over Lawrence (3-5), Macalester took control with three runs in each of the first two innings for a 6-0 lead. In the top of the first, first year Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) singled home junior Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), then scored along with senior Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) on a double by senior Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson). Then in the second, first year Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest) delivered a two-run double and came home on a single by Welch. After Lawrence scored twice in the bottom of the second, Nicholson plated Pedersen with a single and first year Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) came around from second to score and give the Scots an 8-2 edge in the top of the third. Pedersen singled to plate Johnson in the top of the fourth, and the Vikings tallied two more runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 9-4. A pinch-hit RBI single by first year Rebecca Heinze (Prescott, Wis./Rosemount) that brought home senior Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) in the fifth put the Scots up 10-4.

In the top of the sixth, a grounder by senior Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) allowed Morrical to score, with Holland racing around from second to score on the throw for a 12-4 lead. Lawrence stayed alive with a run in the bottom of the sixth, only to have Macalester score three more runs in the top of the seventh. Welch singled to score junior Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown), Holland drew a bases-loaded walk and Woerman drove in Morrical with a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring. Johnson went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Welch and Pedersen each registered three hits and three RBIs in the win. Sophomore Maddie Molay (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) struck out four batters and allowed a hit in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Against Utica (5-4), the Pioneers opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning before breaking the game open with six runs in the second. Macalester managed six hits in the game, including doubles by Welch and Church, but was unable to get on the scoreboard in a 9-0 loss. Church and Nicholson each had two hits for the Scots.

Macalester hosts UW-River Falls for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 29 in the Scots' home opener. The first game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. at the Macalester Softball Complex.
