CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday at THE Spring Games at Legends Way Ballfields. The Scots lost the first game to Meredith College, 9-4, then defeated Susquehanna in the second game, 4-2 to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-2 on their Spring Break trip to Florida.
Against Meredith (6-4), the Avenging Angels scored seven runs, one earned, on three Macalester errors and seven hits over the first three innings. The Scots put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, with junior
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) hitting a lead-off double and scoring on a single by first year
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and a throwing error. Then in the sixth, first year
Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) roped a triple to right-centerfield, scoring seniors
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon). Holland later scored on a grounder by first year
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) to make the score 7-4. That's as close as Macalester would get, as Meredith tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh in a 9-4 win. Sophomore
Maddie Molay (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.
In the win over Susquehanna (2-4), the Scots broke through in the third inning with three runs. Senior
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) led off with a single and came around to score on a double by first year
Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest). Later in the inning, Johnson and junior
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) both came home on a throwing error for a 3-0 lead. The River Hawks tallied a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a one-run game, 3-2. In the sixth, Church reached on an error, stole second and scored on a two-out single by senior
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) for a 4-2 advantage.
Bojorquez closed out a complete-game victory by limiting Susquehanna to one hit over the final three innings. She struck out 11 batters while giving up two unearned runs on four hits and a pair of walks in seven innings. Johnson finished with two hits to lead the offense.
Macalester returns to action at THE Spring Games on Thursday, Mar. 14 with games against Hamilton College and Earlham College, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Central at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
