ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus College, 83-70 in a MIAC contest Monday night at Gus Young Court. The loss drops the Scots to 9-13 overall and 5-12 in league play, while the Gusties move to 11-9, 10-5 MIAC.
Over the first four minutes of the first half, Macalester used three-pointers by junior guards
Tom Andreae (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and
Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose), and four points from junior forward
Armando Akapo-Nwagbo (Owerri, Nigeria/Pomona) to take a 12-9 lead. Gustavus took control of the half by scoring the next 17 points for a 26-12 advantage with 9:27 on the clock. Andreae and junior guard
Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) drained threes, and first year forward
Simon Weisserman (Chicago, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) made a basket to cut the deficit to eight, 28-20 with 5:21 left in the half.
After the Gusties pushed the lead back up to 13, Macalester closed out the half on an 8-2 run, including a pair of threes from sophomore guard
Eric Wentz (Minot, N.D./Minot), to make the halftime score 43-36 Gustavus. Both teams hit seven three-pointers in the first half, with the Gusties scoring seven points off four Macalester turnovers.
Momentum stayed with the Scots early in the second half, as a three by Andreae and a basket from Gold made it a two-point game, 43-41. After the teams exchanged baskets, Gustavus' Evan Wieker and Spencer Swanson hit back-to-back threes to extend the lead to eight, 51-43 with 17:19 to play. Midway through the second half the lead remained eight points when the Gusties tallied seven consecutive points for their largest lead of the game, 69-54 with 8:21 remaining. The Scots never came closer than 11 the rest of the way to drop its fourth game in a row.
Gustavus shot a blistering 65.2 percent from the field in the second half compared to 48.1 percent for Macalester, which committed 16 turnovers for the game. Wentz was 4-of-7 from three-point range and 9-of-15 overall to match his career high with 22 points. He also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Williams registered 16 points, five boards and five assists, with Gold adding eight points and four assists. Wyatt Olson led Gustavus with 24 points.
Next up for the Scots is a road game at Hamline University on Saturday, Feb. 10. The MIAC game begins at 3:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
