ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus College, 83-70 in a MIAC contest Monday night at Gus Young Court. The loss drops the Scots to 9-13 overall and 5-12 in league play, while the Gusties move to 11-9, 10-5 MIAC.

Over the first four minutes of the first half, Macalester used three-pointers by junior guards Tom Andreae (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose), and four points from junior forward Armando Akapo-Nwagbo (Owerri, Nigeria/Pomona) to take a 12-9 lead. Gustavus took control of the half by scoring the next 17 points for a 26-12 advantage with 9:27 on the clock. Andreae and junior guard Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) drained threes, and first year forward Simon Weisserman (Chicago, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) made a basket to cut the deficit to eight, 28-20 with 5:21 left in the half.

After the Gusties pushed the lead back up to 13, Macalester closed out the half on an 8-2 run, including a pair of threes from sophomore guard Eric Wentz (Minot, N.D./Minot), to make the halftime score 43-36 Gustavus. Both teams hit seven three-pointers in the first half, with the Gusties scoring seven points off four Macalester turnovers.

Momentum stayed with the Scots early in the second half, as a three by Andreae and a basket from Gold made it a two-point game, 43-41. After the teams exchanged baskets, Gustavus' Evan Wieker and Spencer Swanson hit back-to-back threes to extend the lead to eight, 51-43 with 17:19 to play. Midway through the second half the lead remained eight points when the Gusties tallied seven consecutive points for their largest lead of the game, 69-54 with 8:21 remaining. The Scots never came closer than 11 the rest of the way to drop its fourth game in a row.

Gustavus shot a blistering 65.2 percent from the field in the second half compared to 48.1 percent for Macalester, which committed 16 turnovers for the game. Wentz was 4-of-7 from three-point range and 9-of-15 overall to match his career high with 22 points. He also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
