ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester women's basketball team hosted Augsburg this afternoon in the Leonard Center for its final game of the season. The Scots rounded out the season on a high, defeating the Auggies 66-60. Macalester finishes the season 10-15 (7-13 MIAC). This is the first time since the 2016-17 campaign the Scots have amassed 10 victories in a season and the first time since the 2011-12 season to secure at least seven conference victories. In 2016-17 the Scots went 11-14 (5-13 MIAC) and in 2011-12 the Scots went 12-13 (10-12 MIAC).
Senior guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) was assisted by fellow senior guard
Maia Pedrosa (South San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) to open the scoring. The Auggies then went on a 10-3 run to lead 10-5 with two minutes on the clock. First year guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) ended the Auggies' run and junior guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) sank an important three at the buzzer, to trail by one, 12-11, into the second quarter. The Scots scored the first five points of the quarter to take a 16-12 lead after just over a minute of play. Palmen, senior guard
Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), and first year guard
Acacia Edmond (Houston, Texas/Shadow Creek) combined to take the lead. The Auggies would drop a three, but Panos answered back with her own from beyond the arc to keep the lead at four. The Scots would finish out the quarter outscoring the Auggies 15-7 and lead 34-22 into halftime. Daley led the Scots with six points in the run.
Smith answered Augsburg's first two buckets of the half. The Auggies put up five but fouled Starks with 4:14 on the clock, who successfully completed an and-one to keep a 10-point lead, 41-31. The quarter ended with the Scots up seven, 43-36. Edmond started off the fourth on a high for the Scots, completing her own and-one. Augsburg would go on a 6-0 lead before Palmen would drain a three to end their run. The Auggies would get within one, 49-48 with 6:01 on the clock, but the Scots held them off. Norquist and Starks would combine for 12 points in a 17-12 run at the end of the quarter to claim victory, 66-60.
Starks led the Scots with 18 points and three blocks. Smith secured a season high 11 rebounds and added nine points. Norquist tallied 11 points and had a team high four assists. The Scots shot 45.1% from the field and 40% from three, while the Auggies only shot 34.9% from the field and 36.8% from the three.
The Scots honored their seniors Palmen, Pedrosa, Panos, and
Jada Northover (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University HS). The Scots return 13 to the court next season.
