ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team renewed an old rivalry on Monday with an exhibition game at the University of St. Thomas. The Tommies, who were annual opponents of the Scots until transitioning to Division I in 2021, won 84-43 in a game that counts for St. Thomas but not for Macalester.
After scoring the final eight points of the first quarter to take a commanding 26-9 lead, the Tommies never looked back, leading by as many as 31 in the first half and 41 for the game. The story for the Scots was senior guard
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School), who led all players with 21 points. The MIAC's leading scorer the past two seasons, Starks hit a couple three-pointers and made all nine of her attempts from the free throw line. She also had three rebounds and two blocks.
Senior forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) also had a solid performance against the Division I Tommies, registering 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) also grabbed seven boards to go with six points and two assists. Jade Hill led St. Thomas with 16 points.
Prior to Monday's exhibition, Macalester hadn't played the Tommies since Jan. 22, 2020. The Scots' last win over the former MIAC power was on Jan. 2, 2010, a 60-41 decision in the Leonard Center.
Macalester begins its MIAC schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 4 when Hamline University visits the Leonard Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
