ST. PAUL, Minn. – A goal by senior midfielder
Mikaely Evans (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) in the 89th minute completed a comeback from a 2-0 deficit and gave the Macalester College women's soccer team a big 3-2 victory at Hamline University Saturday afternoon at Pat Paterson Field. The MIAC win improves the Scots to 6-7-3 overall and 3-5-2 in conference play to stay alive in the MIAC Playoff picture. The Pipers fall to 5-9-5, 1-6-3 MIAC.
Hamline opened the scoring with a goal by Addyson Barrett in the 15th minute. Then in the 23rd minute, Barrett tallied her second goal of the game off an assist from Maya Dempsey for a 2-0 Pipers lead.
The slow start did not hinder the Scots' determination. The comeback began early in the second half, when junior midfielder
Sophie Jones (Burien, Wash./Highline) received a pass from sophomore
Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston) and scored from 20 yards out in the 53rd minute to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Then in the 79th minute, a handball was called on the Pipers in the penalty area and a penalty kick was awarded. Senior midfielder
Gaby Valle (Compton, Calif./Chadwick School) put the ball into the left side of the goal to tie the score at 2-2. With time winding down, a long clearance by junior midfielder
Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) deflected off a Hamline defender and bounced to the right side, where Evans ran onto the ball. Her shot from 15 yards out beat Hamline goalkeeper Isabella Jensen to her right and put the Scots on top for good.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) started and made two saves in 28 minutes. First year
Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) finished the game and registered four saves in 62 minutes. Macalester held a slight 16-15 edge in shots and put 10 shots on frame compared to eight for Hamline.
The Scots conclude the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 2 with a home game against Augsburg University. The MIAC game begins at 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
