MOORHEAD, Minn. – Macalester women's basketball took the road trip to Moorhead this evening for a MIAC contest against the Cobbers of Concordia. The Scots kept it close for the first half, but the Cobbers were able to pull away in the second half, and defeat Macalester 79-46. The Scots are now 8-10 overall, 5-8 MIAC), while Concordia sits second in the conference with a record of 13-3 (12-1 MIAC).
First year guard
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) and junior guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) quickly put up two baskets in the paint. However, the Cobbers were able to pull away slightly to an 11-4 lead with 5:20 on the clock. Starks sank two free throws and another basket to keep the gap close. With two and a half minutes left in the quarter, first year guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) assisted fellow first year guard
Acacia Edmond (Houston, Texas/Shadow Creek), who knocked one down from behind the arc, to close the gap to 14-11. Concordia responded however, and took a 20-13 lead into the second. Senior guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) hit a layup and knocked in a free throw to kick off the next quarter. The Scots would continuously respond to the Cobbers' shots, never allowing the Cobbers to pull ahead more than six points trailing 34-28 into the break.
Starks put up the first basket of the third, but Concordia went on a 7-0 run to take a 41-30 lead over the Scots with 7:02 on the clock. Starks stopped that run of the Cobbers, but Concordia built their lead to 27 points with 1:39 left in the third. Sophomore forward
Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) and Daley put up a few more points for the Scots, but they trailed 63-38 heading into the fourth. Palmen put up a three to kick off the fourth, but the deficit was too much to overcome and the Scots fell 79-46.
Macalester shot 8-for-11 from the line tonight. Starks led the team with 16 points while Daley, Corbett, and junior guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) each registered three assists. Daley totaled seven points while Palmen had six.
