NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College football team compiled 379 yards of offense but produced just 13 points in a 38-13 loss at St. Olaf on Saturday at Klein Field at Manitou. The defeat is the first of the season for the Scots, who are now 2-1. The Oles, who avenged last year's loss to the Scots on Championship Week, improve to 2-1.
Macalester started the game with a 14-play, 71-yard scoring drive that ended with senior quarterback
Michael Nadeau (Garden Grove, Calif./La Quinta) diving over the pile into the end zone from the 1-yard line for a 7-0 lead. St. Olaf answered on its first possession with a 32-yard touchdown run by Theo Doran to tie the score at 7-7. The Oles took the lead midway through the second quarter, with Doran connecting with Derek Hansen on a 34-yard touchdown pass. Near the end of the second quarter, a touchdown pass from Doran to Devin McNearny made the score 20-7 with less than a minute to play in the half. Although the Scots began their drive with just 38 seconds remaining, they did not just run out the clock. Three completions from Nadeau and a pass interference call on the Oles moved the ball to the St. Olaf 25-yard line. Nadeau hit senior receiver
Michael Poker (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) for a 25-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked and returned the distance for two St. Olaf points, making the halftime score 22-13.
In the second half the Oles scored a touchdown in the third quarter and kicked a field goal in the fourth to lead 32-13. Macalester's offense moved the ball in the second half but stalled twice in St. Olaf territory in the third quarter. St. Olaf added a late touchdown after the Scots turned the ball over on downs on their own 35-yard line to make the final score 38-13.
Nadeau completed 29-of-56 for 297 yards and one touchdown. His favorite target was senior receiver
Nathan Wu (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate), who caught 10 passes for 126 yards. Poker had four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown, while junior receiver
Gabe Kasper (Shoreview, Minn./Irondale) had four receptions for 42 yards. Senior linebacker
Joshua Strickler (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield), senior defensive back
Troy Barksdale (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) and junior defensive back
Cameron Latvis (West St. Paul, Minn./Two Rivers) each had eight tackles on the day to lead the defense. Junior defensive lineman
Max Menache (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) had a sack in his first game this season.
Doran threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns, while Jordan Embry rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries for St. Olaf.
Macalester returns home to host St. Scholastica in another cross-divisional matchup on Saturday, Sept. 30. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
