CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team ended its Spring Break trip at THE Spring Games with a victory over Lawrence and a loss to Fredonia Friday afternoon at Legends Way Ballfields. The Scots return north with an 8-8 overall record following a 4-6 run on their Spring Break trip.
After three scoreless innings to start the game against Lawrence, Macalester put six runs on the scoreboard in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the fourth, senior
Gabriella Plisko Alpharetta, Ga./The Galloway School) delivered a two-run single, while seniors
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) and
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) both hit run-scoring singles. Junior
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) and sophomore
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) also executed squeeze bunts that scored runs in the fourth. In the fifth inning, the first three batters drew walks, setting up a two-run single by sophomore
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown). After junior
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) doubled home sophomore
Madeleine Kemper (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln), Bergin hit a two-run double to score Woerman and Futchko. Junior
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) followed with a single that plated Bergin for a 12-0 lead. Lawrence scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 12-1.
Futchko went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Bergin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Morrical also had two hits in the win. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) pitched three innings and blanked the Vikings on two hits while striking out three and walking one. First year
Maddie Molay (Northbrook, Ill/Glenbrook North) pitched the final two innings and gave up a run on four hits.
Against Fredonia, the Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the first, another in the third and two more in the fourth to lead 5-0. The Scots' offense came to life in the bottom of the sixth. Nicholson led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Futchko. Macalester then loaded the bases on a single by Katzin and an error. A grounder by senior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) brought home Futchko, and Church followed with a two-run single that made the score 5-4 Fredonia. The Blue Devils were able to score a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and retire the Scots in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Church and Nicholson each had two hits to lead the offense. First year
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill/York) came on in relief and gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Macalester plays a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 25 at the University of Northwestern. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m. in Roseville, Minn.
