Women’s Basketball: Macalester Closes Out Season at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester women's basketball team played its final game of the season this afternoon, taking on Augsburg. The Scots battled hard, but ultimately fell 70-46 to the Auggies. Macalester finishes the season 7-18 (6-16 MIAC).

Sophomore guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) put the Scots up 2-0 to begin the game, and fellow sophomore guard/forward Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) retook the lead 4-3. Starks then tied the game at six all with 5:18 on the clock. The Scots grew their lead to six, with buckets from Starks and sophomore guard Camille Samuel (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory). At the end of 10 minutes, the game was tied at 15.

The second quarter was back-and-forth but senior guard Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) sank an important three with 5:46 left in the half to take the lead 22-20. Starks hit both of her free throws to take a two-point lead, 24-22 into the break.

In the third, Starks and Norquist kept Macalester in the lead until the Auggies tied the game at 30 with 6:07 left in the quarter. The Auggies built a lead as large as 14 points, but Starks hit two free throws at the end of the third quarter to trail 46-34 heading into the final 10 minutes. In the fourth, Norquist registered seven points but the Auggies maintained the lead until the final whistle. The Scots fell 70-46.

The Scots made 10-of-16 from the line. Starks led Macalester with 20 points, an assist and nine rebounds. Norquist finished behind Starks with 15 points, one steal, and six rebounds.
The Scots return 12 to the court next year.
