Women’s Basketball: Scots’ Second Half Rally Stopped Short by Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester women's basketball team faced MIAC opponent Concordia this evening, traveling to Moorhead. Despite being down 33 at half time, Macalester rallied in the second half, shooting 50% from the field in the final 20 minutes. However, the deficit was too much to overcome, and the Scots fell 73-57. Macalester falls to 4-16 (3-14 MIAC).

Sophomore guards/forwards Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) and Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) put the Scots up 4-2 to begin the game. Yet the Cobbers were precise in their shooting and led 24-8 after 10 minutes. Concordia continued to limit the Scots in the second. Norquist, Starks, and senior guard Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) were able to knock in some points, but Macalester trailed 47-14 at halftime.

The Scots turned a switch in the second half. Cushing and Starks continued to chip away at the Cobbers' lead. Even with Concordia up 35 points with 4:44 on the clock, Macalester continued to fight back. Starks completed a pair of free throws, an and-one, and a three-pointer, continuing to add to the Scots' total. Two more three-pointers, made by Cushing and junior guard Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./Andover), put Macalester within 28, 64-36, heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Scots limited the Cobbers in the last quarter to nine points, while Macalester added 21. With 7:44 on the clock, sophomore guard Camille Samuel (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) started a 16-0 run for the Scots, banking two baskets from beyond the arc. Norquist added five, Starks added four, and junior guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) tallied one. The Scots' drive at the end was cut short, and Macalester fell 73-57.

Starks led Macalester with 20 points, two blocks, one steal, five rebounds and two assists. Norquist followed with 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Samuel was 3-for-3 scoring eight for the Scots off the bench. Macalester shot 50% in the second half, and went 10-for-15 from the line.

Macalester's next game will be on Saturday February 4. The Scots will host Gustavus Adolphus in the Leonard Center at 3:00 p.m.
