ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester women's basketball team took a road trip to St. Peter this evening to face No. 12 Gustavus. The Scots fought back, but couldn't overcome the sharp shooting Gusties, and fell 70-39. The Scots fall to 4-4 (2-3 MIAC).
The first quarter saw the Gusties take a 24-2 lead. The Gusties extended their lead to 27 points, before senior guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) knocked in a three-pointer for Macalester with 6:26 on the clock. Junior guard/forwards
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) and
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) along with senior guard
Maia Pedrosa (South San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) combined to go into the half down, 43-13.
Starks kicked off the third quarter sinking a three-pointer and then successfully completing an and-one to close the gap to 24 points, 43-19. However, the Gusties continued to build their lead in the third and increased it to as much as 37 points in the fourth. Junior guard
Jessica Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) sank one from beyond the arc just before the final whistle, but the Scots fell 70-39.
The Scots shot just 27.9% of the field compared to No. 12 Gustavus' 43.9%. Starks nabbed 20 of Macalester's points, and recorded a team high six rebounds. The Scots shot 80% from the line.
Macalester is set for another road MIAC game on Saturday Dec 9. The Scots face Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn. at 1:00 p.m.
