Women’s Basketball: Edmond, Daley, and Starks Lead Macalester to Overtime Victory over St. Scholastica, 60-57

DULUTH, Minn. – The Macalester women's basketball team competed on the road against St. Scholastica this afternoon. The game was tight, and went into overtime, but the Scots came out on top, 60-57. Macalester is now 4-2 (2-1 MIAC).

In the first, the Scots and the Saints battled back and forth for the lead. In the last two minutes, the Scots pulled ahead, 12-8, with junior guard/ forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) and first year guard Acacia Edmond (Houston, Texas/Shadow Creek) sinking free throws. The second quarter began with the Saints tying up the game at 13 with 6:31 on the clock. However, first year guard Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) responded with two buckets and a free throw to retake the lead 18-13. The Scots battled to maintain the lead into halftime, with Edmond knocking down six points, including one from beyond the arc, and a basket from junior guard/forward Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School). Macalester took a slight 26-24 lead into the break.

The Scots increased their lead to seven, 31-24 to begin the third. Senior guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) knocked in an important three-pointer. However, St. Scholastica responded with a 13-4 run to take the lead, 37-35, with 4:35 remaining in the quarter. Senior guard Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), assisted by Palmen, immediately sank a three to regain the lead, yet the game was tied at 40 headed into the final 10 minutes.

The Scots opened the fourth with a 10-5 run. Edmond notched half the points in the run, ending it with a three-pointer. Starks, Palmen, and Edmond kept the Scots ahead, but in the final seconds, a three-pointer from the Saints tied the game, 57-57, and the game went to overtime. Daley and Edmond knocked down some free throws in overtime and secured a 60-57 conference victory.

Edmond led the team with a career high 18 points and a career high seven rebounds. She was also 6-for-9 from the line. Peyton Starks registered a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Starks also tallied two blocks and three steals. Norquist notched a team best four steals and seven points. The team shot 33.3% from beyond the arc compared to the Saints' 13.8%.

The Scots' next game will be at the Leonard Center on Monday Dec 4. The Scots host Bethel, with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.
