DULUTH, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team shot a season-high 56.5 percent from the field and made 15 three-pointers in a 99-86 victory over the College of St. Scholastica Saturday afternoon at Reif Gymnasium. The MIAC road win gives the Scots (5-3) a 2-1 record in conference play. The Saints fall to 1-4, 0-2 MIAC.

Macalester jumped out to an 11-5 lead following three-pointers by junior guard Tom Andreae (Newton, Mass./Newton North), first year guard Kaden Holdbrook (Palo Alto, Calif./Gunn) and sophomore forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) in the first three minutes of the game. From that point St. Scholastica heated up offensively, outscoring the Scots 26-11 over the next 5:37 to take a 31-22 advantage. Macalester responded with three-pointers from junior guards Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) and Marcus Crawford (Edina, Minn./Edina) and a basket by junior guard Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) to cut the deficit to one, 31-30 with nine minutes left in the first half. After the Saints pushed the lead back up to five, three Crawford three-pointers sparked a 22-7 spree to put the Scots back on top, 55-45 two minutes before halftime. St. Scholastica scored seven of the final eight points of the half to make the halftime score 56-52 Macalester. The two teams were on fire from beyond the arc, with the Scots shooting 61.1 percent (11-of-18) and the Saints making 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from three-point range in the first half.

Momentum stayed with the hosts early in the second half, with St. Scholastica opening with a 10-5 run to take back the lead, 62-61. With the game on the line, Macalester used the three-pointer to regain control. Andreae, Holdbrook and sophomore guard Eric Wentz (Minot, N.D./Minot) hit from deep in a key 12-1 run that gave the Scots a 73-63 lead with 12:20 remaining. After the Saints tallied the next four points to make it a six-point game, 73-67 midway through the second half, Macalester pulled away, leading by as many as 19 points before heading home with a 99-86 victory on the road. The Scots shot 50.0 percent from the field in the second half while tightening up the defense to hold St. Scholastica to 30.6 percent shooting.
