Football: Scots Fall in First Skyline Division Game

ST. PAUL, Minn.  –  The Macalester football team hosted Bethel for a MIAC Skyline Division contest in front of its home crowd this evening. Despite the Scots best efforts, Macalester fell 49-14. The Scots are now 2-3 (0-1 MIAC Skyline Division).
 
The Royals scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and two in the second, along with successful extra point conversions, to take a 28-0 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Bethel scored another touchdown for a 35-0 lead. The Scots answered back on the next drive. On 2 & 11, senior quarterback Michael Nadeau (Garden Grove, Calif./La Quinta) completed a pass to senior wide receiver Michael Poker (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) for 53 yards down to the Bethel 18. Nadeau then completed a 16-yard pass to senior wide receiver Nathan Wu (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate). On first and goal, senior running back Logan Pampel (Johnson Creek, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) caught Nadeau's pass and ran in for the touchdown. A successful two-point conversion from Nadeau to Poker brought the game to 35-8.
 
Bethel started the fourth quarter off with another touchdown. The Scots were able to get another touchdown halfway through the quarter. Nadeau passed to Poker who ran it for the 82-yard touchdown, bringing the game to 42-14. However, the Royals were able to tack on another touchdown and take the game 49-14.
 
Senior defensive line Xavier Pittman (Spring, Texas/Spring) made three tackles on the night, including a sack. Senior defensive back Troy Barksdale (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) led the team with nine tackles while junior defensive back Cameron Latvis (West St. Paul, Minn./Two Rivers) had eight. Nadeau threw for 319 yards and Poker recorded 170 yds on eight catches.
 
The Scots' next game will be Saturday Oct 14. Macalester travels to St. Peter to play Gustavus. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
