Men’s Basketball: Williams Scores 28 in Loss at Carleton

ST. PAUL, Minn. –  Junior guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) registered a game-high 28 points, as the Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game at Carleton College, 75-60 Saturday afternoon at West Gym. The Scots are now 8-5 on the season, including a 5-4 mark in conference play, while the Knights improve to 12-2, 7-2 MIAC.

Neither team led by more than three points over the first 11 minutes of the game, with 12 lead changes and two ties during that stretch. A basket by Williams with 8:44 left in the half put Macalester ahead, 22-19. From that point until the end of the half, Carleton outscored the Scots, 15-5 to take a 34-27 advantage into the halftime break.

A 9-1 run to open the second half allowed the Knights to lead 45-28 at the 16:43 mark. After a Williams basket, Carleton reeled off 14 straight points to building its largest lead of the game, 59-32 with 13:05 remaining. Sixteen points over the next 10 minutes by Williams helped to bring the Scots to within 13, 72-59 with 1:21 left to play, but it was not enough to prevent the Knights from winning the first of the two meetings between the teams this season.

Williams shot 11-of-18 from the field and made five threes in eight attempts to finish with 28 points. He also had four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. Williams was the only Scot to score in double figures, with senior guard Ahad Anjum (Karachi, Pakistan/American School of Dubai) scoring a career-best eight points to go with four rebounds. Matt Banovetz and Beck Page paced Carleton with 19 points apiece.

Macalester hosts Concordia College on Monday, Jan. 16 in another MIAC contest. The game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
