Women’s Soccer: Macalester Suffers First Defeat of the Season, 4-1 to Augsburg

St. Paul, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team entered a tough battle today against the Auggies of Augsburg. The Scots fought hard, but fell to the Auggies 4-1 in the MIAC matchup. Macalester is now 4-1-2 (1-1-0 MIAC).

The game started as a back-and-forth battle, with both teams taking opportunities. Macalester's senior Lucy Grochulska (Henrico, VA./Henrico) and first year Sophie Jones (Burien, Wash./Highline) played well in the center, creating offensive attacks. Junior Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) also made some strong plays out on the wing. The Scots struck first, with senior Julia Kispert (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) putting the ball into the bottom right corner to give Macalester a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Junior Jocelyn Radke (Indianapolis, Ind.) made an impressive save in the 43rd minute, but the Auggies leveled the game at one of a corner just before halftime.

Augsburg went up 2-1, one minute into the second half. Juniors Rachel Colson (Denver, Colo./East) and Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) along with senior Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) took chances for the Scots. The Auggies would score twice more in the half to take the game 4-1.

Macalester looks ahead to competition on Sunday Sept. 18. The Scots head to Waverly, Iowa to face off against Wartburg College at 2:00 p.m.
