St. Paul, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team entered a tough battle today against the Auggies of Augsburg. The Scots fought hard, but fell to the Auggies 4-1 in the MIAC matchup. Macalester is now 4-1-2 (1-1-0 MIAC).
The game started as a back-and-forth battle, with both teams taking opportunities. Macalester's senior
Lucy Grochulska (Henrico, VA./Henrico) and first year
Sophie Jones (Burien, Wash./Highline) played well in the center, creating offensive attacks. Junior
Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) also made some strong plays out on the wing. The Scots struck first, with senior
Julia Kispert (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) putting the ball into the bottom right corner to give Macalester a 1-0 lead in the 33
rd minute. Junior
Jocelyn Radke (Indianapolis, Ind.) made an impressive save in the 43
rd minute, but the Auggies leveled the game at one of a corner just before halftime.
Augsburg went up 2-1, one minute into the second half. Juniors
Rachel Colson (Denver, Colo./East) and
Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) along with senior
Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) took chances for the Scots. The Auggies would score twice more in the half to take the game 4-1.
Macalester looks ahead to competition on Sunday Sept. 18. The Scots head to Waverly, Iowa to face off against Wartburg College at 2:00 p.m.
