Women’s Soccer: Scots Dominate in Opening Day Victory

St. Paul, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team opened its 2022 season with a dominant win over Northland College. The Scots blew out the Lumberjills 5-0, to start the season off with a 1-0 record.

Macalester was on the offensive from the whistle, getting a shot off in the first minute. The Scots were relentless in their pursuit for a goal, barely allowing Northland beyond half field. The Scots were rewarded in the 31st minute when junior Mia Brisbin (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads School) put one in the net, assisted by fellow junior Rachel Colson (Denver, Colo./East). A minute later, two seniors combined to double the lead. Lucy Grochulska (Henrico, VA./Henrico) slotted a ball into the net off a pass from Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah). Adding to Macalester's lead, first year Sophie Jones (Burien, Wash./Highline) scored her first collegiate goal with assists from sophomore Baela Funk (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Lesmeister. At half, the Scots were up 3-0.

Macalester continued its offensive dominance, getting off eight shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half. In the 74th minute, sophomore Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) netted a goal of her own, with an assist from fellow sophomore Eva Eiss (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah). Two minutes later, Colson's pass connected with Brisbin again, giving the Scots a 5-0 lead and Brisbin with two goals to her name. Macalester never let up, and completed the shutout, winning 5-0.

This also marks the first collegiate win as a head coach for the Scots' Madeline Buckley. The Scots start the season off with a strong win and will continue their season on Saturday Sept. 3. Macalester will play Lawerence University at 3:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
