Men’s Tennis: Macalester Falls to Carleton in MIAC Playoff Semifinals

Northfield, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team ended its season with a 5-0 loss to No. 2 seeded Carleton in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs today. The No. 3 seeded Scots finished the 2022 season with an 11-7 (7-2 MIAC) record.
 
No. 1 doubles pair of first year Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) and junior Matthew Sullivan (Tacoma, Wash./Weil) battled to the end, almost preventing a sweep, falling 8-7 (7-4 tiebreaker). Senior Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and first year Liam Lynch (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) also fought to an 8-7 (7-2 tiebreaker) loss at No. 3 doubles. First year Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) and junior Josh Marine (Honolulu, Hawaii/Summit) competed to an 8-4 loss at No. 2 doubles.
 
 The Knights picked up two 6-1 game wins to take the point at No. 5 singles and a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to cap off the win. Carleton will face Gustavus in the finals.
 
Junior Anton Korolev (Moscow, Russia/Weil) posted a 9-6 singles record (7-2 MIAC) to lead the Scots. Sargent and Sullivan led the team in doubles with a 6-2 record all at No. 1 doubles.
 
This marks the last competition at Macalester for seniors Poland, Alexander Hamann (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln), George Steinke (Swathmore, PA./Strath Haven), Sun Tun (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central), and Karsten Knutsen (Minneapolis, Minn./Riverfield Country Day (Okla.).
