ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) and first year guard
Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) each scored 19 points, as the Macalester College men's basketball team defeated St. Scholastica, 72-63 in a MIAC game Monday night in the Leonard Center. The win gives the Scots (10-11, 7-9 MIAC) 10 victories in a season for the first time since the 2006-07 squad won 11 games. The Saints drop to 3-18, 1-15 MIAC.
Macalester got off to a slow start in the game, with St. Scholastica building a 26-20 lead with 6:12 on the clock. A conventional three-point play by Ramos sparked a 16-4 run that put the Scots on top, 36-30. Ramos had seven points and Gold hit a three in the run. Noah Winesett made a three-pointer near the end of the half to make the halftime score 36-33 Macalester.
In the second half, back-to-back baskets on their first two possessions gave the Saints the lead, 37-36. The Scots responded with eight points from Gold in an 11-3 spree to regain the upper hand, 47-40 with 15:11 remaining. After St. Scholastica cut it to four, 49-45, Macalester tallied nine straight points for its largest lead of the game, 58-45 with 8:22 to play. The Saints fought back, reducing the deficit to seven twice in the final four minutes. But sophomore guard
Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) drained a three, and Ramos made four free throws down the stretch to give the Scots the win.
Macalester committed a season-high 19 turnovers but shot 47.9 percent from the field for the game while holding St. Scholastica to 39.0 percent. Ramos was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe and led the team with nine rebounds and five assists. Gold made 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and grabbed seven boards. Williams finished with 11 points and four rebounds, while senior center
Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) contributed eight points and three boards. Isiah Hendrickson led the Saints with 17 points.
