ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team continues its run in the MIAC Playoffs with a semifinal game at Augsburg University on Friday, Feb. 25 at Si Melby Hall. The winner will advance to the MIAC championship game on Sunday, Feb. 27.
The Scots, who are seeded sixth in the tournament, defeated No. 3 Carleton on the road, 70-56 on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals for the third time in the program's history. The win was the first playoff victory on the road for the Scots in four tries. A mammoth 22-4 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half gave the Scots a 40-18 lead at halftime, a lead that proved to be insurmountable as Macalester closed out the win. First year guard
Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) made 6-of-7 from three-point range and scored 21 points. Sophomore guard
Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) registered 16 points, four rebounds and three steals, while senior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) notched his second straight double-double with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
The win over the Knights clinched a winning season for the Scots (14-12) for the first time since the 2003-04 season. Macalester earned a bye into the semifinals that year and also made the semifinals in 2002 after beating Saint John's in the quarterfinals. This year is the first time the Scots have won two MIAC Playoff games in the same season, as the Carleton win followed a 79-66 victory over St. Scholastica in a first-round game on Feb. 19. Macalester is looking to advance to the MIAC finals for the first time since 2004, when the Scots lost to Gustavus in the MIAC championship game.
Augsburg (17-6) finished second in the MIAC standings with a 13-4 record to earn the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. After starting the season 14-2, the Auggies are 3-4 in February, including a 65-63 loss to Macalester in the Leonard Center on Feb. 14. Augsburg beat Bethel convincingly, 82-66 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, with Will Schmidt scoring 17 points off the bench. The Auggies feature Joe Palmer, who averages 21.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game to lead the MIAC in both categories. Prior to last Monday's loss to the Scots, Augsburg handed Macalester a 92-55 setback on Jan. 8 in Si Melby Hall.
The other semifinal has top-seeded Saint John's (21-4) hosting No. 5 St. Olaf (16-10). The Johnnies defeated No. 8 Hamline, 74-53, while the Oles upended fourth-seeded Gustavus, 76-73 in the quarterfinals.
The Macalester-Augsburg game will start at 7:45 p.m. on Friday following the women's MIAC semifinal featuring Augsburg and Hamline. Here's the entire MIAC Men's Basketball Playoff schedule.
