Men’s Basketball: Macalester Faces Carleton in MIAC Quarterfinals

| By:
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team will play at Carleton College in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. at West Gym. The winner will advance to the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 25.

The Scots advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating St. Scholastica, 79-66 on Saturday in front of a full crowd in the Leonard Center. The win marked the first men's basketball postseason game in the Leonard Center, which was built in 2008, and the first playoff game for the Scots since 2005. Sophomore guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) scored a career-high 30 points, first year guard Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) hit six three-pointers and had 20 points, and senior guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) almost had a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

This is the most successful season since 2003-04 for the Scots, who are 13-12 overall after placing sixth in the MIAC with a 9-10 record. Williams ranks third in the MIAC in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game. Gold is fourth in three-pointers made with 58, while Ramos ranks eighth with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Macalester won all three of its games last week, earning head coach Abe Woldeslassie '08 Division III Coach of the Week honors from HoopDirt.com.

The Scots are making their fourth appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, joining the teams from 2002, 2004 and 2005. Macalester's overall record in the playoffs is 3-3, with all three wins coming at home. In 2002, the Scots defeated Saint John's in the quarterfinals and lost at St. Thomas in the semifinals. The 2004 team received a bye to the semifinals, where Macalester beat Concordia to advance to the finals. The Scots lost to Gustavus, 75-69 in the MIAC title game. In the most recent playoff game before this current run, Macalester fell to Carleton, 81-77 in 2005.

Carleton (16-6) earned the No. 3 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals by taking third in the MIAC standings with a 13-5 conference record. The Knights defeated Macalester twice this season, 70-61 in Northfield on Jan. 5 and 67-60 in the Leonard Center on Feb. 2. Jeremy Beckler is Carleton's leading scorer at 17.3 points per game. Carleton has a 9-21 record in 22 MIAC Playoff appearances. The Knights' lone title came in 2010.

Tickets for the game are $10 for adults and $2 for students. All spectators must be masked. Links to live stats and video can be found on the Macalester Athletics website.
