Women’s Basketball: Third Quarter the Difference Against Augsburg

St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its 24th game of the season, facing MIAC leader Augsburg. The Scots had a tremendous game, but ultimately fell 67-51. The Scots are now 8-16 (6-15 MIAC).

Junior forward Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) got things started with a layup for the Scots. After giving up the next eight points, junior guard Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) banked her first three of the evening. While the Auggies answered with a three of their own, Cushing would sink another three, making the score 11-8, with 2:48 on the clock. Another three-point shot for the Scots was made by sophomore guard Maia Pedrosa (South San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) and the Scots would go into the second trailing, 16-11.

The second quarter started off with first year guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) making a layup for the Scots. After three points for the Auggies, Cushing made yet another three, assisted by first year guard/forward Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School). The Scots would give up another five points before going on an 8-0 run for almost five minutes. Sabbagh and Cushing both made threes while Starks put up a jumper to tie the game at 24 with 1:22 on the clock. Augsburg would bank a three, while Norquist would make a layup to keep the Scots within one, 27-26. All four of the Scots' last buckets of the half were assisted by Pedrosa.

The Scots started the second half the way they were each quarter, making a layup, this time by sophomore guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) to take the lead, 28-27. The Auggies were hot from the three-point line this quarter, making their first of four in the quarter. Cushing would tie the game back up at 30 before Augsburg went on a 13-1 run, increasing their lead to 43-31, with 4:01 on the clock. Pedrosa would stop the run with a layup of her own. A back-and-forth battle ensued the rest of the quarter, but the Auggies took a 51-38 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Each team opened the fourth with a layup and a three-pointer. Palmen would make another bucket for the Scots before the Auggies sank a pair of free throws with 7:21 on the clock. The Scots held the Auggies for almost 2:30 minutes before the Auggies would find the basket again. Sabbagh would start a 6-2 scoring run for the Scots, bringing the score to 64-51. However, the rally wasn't enough to overcome the Auggies, and the Scots fell 67-51.

Cushing banked 4-for-7 three pointers and led the team with 16 points. Starks and Pedrosa led the team in assists with five and four respectively. The Scots were 38.1% from the three-point line and a 36.2% field goal percentage.

Before the game, Macalester honored its lone senior, Celine Sabbagh for her incredible career.
