CHAPMAN, Calif. – The Macalester women's basketball team played its second game of the season, out in California. The Scots faced the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands. The game went into overtime, but the Scots fell 79-72. The Scots start the season 0-2.
The game remained close early, with both teams being successful offensively. Junior guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) scored both free throws at the beginning of the game to put the Scots on the board. The Bulldogs then took a 12-6 lead with 3:08 on the clock. A three-pointer from junior guard
Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), and a last second jumper from sophomore guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) at the end of the quarter closed Redlands' lead to four, 19-15.
The second quarter started with sophomore guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) making a layup to further close the gap. The Bulldogs would increase their lead back up to as much as seven, 28-21, with 5:51 left in the half. From there, Macalester rallied with baskets from Starks and Norquist, along with a three-pointer from first year
Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) to tie the game. Sophomore
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) scored six of the Scots' last six points of the half to take a 34-30 lead into the break.
The Scots maintained the lead in the third, with their largest lead being 44-35, after junior forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) made an and-one with 6:34 on the clock. Redlands fought back, but with successful free throws and senior guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) making a layup at the end of the quarter, the Scots held on to a 50-48 lead. Palmen and Cushing would increase Macalester's lead to start the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to overtake the lead. The Scots battled to tie the game at the end of regulation, but fell 79-72 in overtime.
Starks led the team with 19 points and Palmen registered 14. Macalester shot 11-for-16 from the free throw line and 28-for-60 from the field. LaFrenz led the squad with 13 rebounds.
Macalester will come back to Minnesota next week to take on the University of Northwestern (MN). The game is set for Wednesday Nov 16.
