Macalester Comes Up Short in Extra-Inning Thriller

St. Paul, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team played an exciting game against Bethel University but ultimately lost 4-3 in 11-innings. The Scots fall to 4-3 (4-3 MIAC) on the season while Bethel improves to 12-5 (6-1 MIAC).

Both teams played stout defense to complement the strong pitching performances from both pitching staffs. Sophomore Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) put the Scots on the board in the top of the second inning after getting hit by a pitch then scoring on double off the wall from junior Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman). Bethel responded with a run of their own.

Bethel took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Macalester answered by scoring one run on a sophomore Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) single that plated senior Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg). The Scots then took a 3-2 lead after a big homerun from junior Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa).

Bethel tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras before ultimately winning on a walk-off balk.

Senior Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) tossed five innings only giving up two hits, one earned run and striking out three batters. First year Matt Rade (Westborough, Mass./St. John's) gave the Scots three strong innings only giving up three hits and allowing two earned runs. Despite getting the loss, sophomore Thomas Windels (New York, N.Y./Episcopal) came into a big moment and pitched 2.1 strong innings only allowing one hit and one earned run.

The Scots will play a double header against Bethel University starting at 1:00 pm.
