ST. PAUL. Minn. - Doug Bolstorff, who was a coach and professor at Macalester College for over 40 years, passed away on Dec. 3 at the age of 90.
From his arrival at Macalester in 1957 as an assistant coach to his retirement in 2000, Doug impacted the lives of countless students, staff and faculty as a coach, professor, mentor and friend. He was an Associate Professor of Physical Education and served as the head coach of the men's basketball, track & field, cross country, baseball and golf teams during his time at Macalester. As the track and cross country coach, Doug led his teams to 11 MIAC championships on the track and eight conference titles in cross country, coaching multiple individual champions in both sports.
As the men's basketball coach for 30 years, Doug became the program's winningest coach with 264 victories. He was named Minnesota's small college Coach of the Year three times, and was the District 13 Coach of the Year in 1971-72 following a 16-9 campaign. His men's basketball teams were some of the first in the state to include Black players, such as All-MIAC player
Jim Mitchell '74. Following his retirement in 2000, Doug was inducted into the Macalester Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
A native of Austin, Minn., Doug was raised in Grand Rapids, Minn., and attended the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of the men's basketball team prior to earning a degree in forestry and natural science. He also earned his Master's in Physical Education at Minnesota. Doug's playing career didn't end there, as he played for the Army team while in the Ordinance Corps in Aberdeen, Md. From there, he ended up getting drafted by the Detroit Pistons of the NBA, where he played for a portion of one season.
"I was fortunate to have Doug Bolstorff as my basketball coach for four years," M Club member
Dean Verdoes '64 said. "In later years, we became very good friends. Doug was one of the kindest and most ethical people I've known in my lifetime."
Doug is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen, his brother, Reverend David Bolstorff, three daughters and five grandchildren. Services will be held at Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan on Monday, Dec. 13 at 11:00 a.m., with a one-hour visitation prior to the service. The 11:00 a.m. service will be live streamed
