Men’s Basketball: Macalester Earns Road Win at Martin Luther, 73-58

NEW ULM, Minn. – First year guard Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) made six three-pointers and scored 24 points to lead the Macalester College men's basketball team to a 73-58 win at Martin Luther College in a non-conference game Tuesday night. The Scots improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-3.

Martin Luther never trailed in the first half and led by as many as eight points following an 8-0 run that made the score 26-18 with 3:49 left in the half. Macalester was able to cut the deficit to four by the end of the half, as a basket by sophomore guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) as time expired made the halftime score 33-29 Knights. The Scots made just 34.4 percent of their shots from the field in the first half, while Martin Luther hit 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Gold, who scored six points on 2-of-8 shooting in the first half, opened the second half with a three-pointer, followed by a layup from first year guard Robert Grace IV (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) that gave Macalester its first lead of the game, 34-33. The Scots held a slight edge over the Knights until back-to-back threes from Gold and Williams, as well as a basket by sophomore guard Jon Kazor (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep), pushed the lead to 10, 53-43 with 9:36 remaining.

Martin Luther was able to pull within six points twice, but a 6-0 run punctuated by Gold's fourth three-pointer of the second half put the game out of reach, 69-55 with 1:21 left to play. After a slow start in the first half, Macalester's shooting improved to 48.4 percent in the second half.

Gold made all four of his shots from three-point range after halftime to finish 6-of-10 from the perimeter and 7-of-14 overall from the field to score a career-high 24 points. He also swiped four steals and grabbed four rebounds. Williams finished with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while senior center Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with four blocks.

The Scots host the University of Minnesota Morris on Thursday, Nov. 11 in another non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
