ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced today that the conference is postponing competition in cross country, soccer, volleyball and football due to the coronavirus pandemic. The MIAC is planning on creating spring schedules for those sports, which currently are considered medium- and high-risk activities for transmitting the virus by the NCAA.
Although the MIAC is allowing low-risk sports golf and tennis to compete in the fall, Macalester has not committed to compete in those sports and is awaiting further guidance about health and safety precautions.
Training, practice, and other athletically-related activities for all teams will be permitted in accordance with NCAA Division III rules and campus, state, and NCAA health directives. Macalester Athletics is focused on reducing risks for team training this fall, and will begin training with physical distance and other safety measures supervised by Macalester's sports medicine physician.
Yesterday, the Midwest Conference, where Macalester's football team competes, announced that they are suspending fall sports through December 31.
