MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team went back to U.S. Bank Stadium for a pair of games against Crown College. Due to a late start and a long first game, both teams were only able to play one full game and three innings of the second game. The Scots took a 9-7 lead into the seventh inning of the first game before the Crown offense exploded for a nine run seventh inning. The deficit was too much to overcome for Macalester.
After today's games, the Scots move to 1-2 on the season and Crown improves to 1-0. Macalester out hit the Storm 12-8. The big difference on the day was the Scots pitching staff walking 12 batters and hitting five compared to Crown walking six walked batters and only hitting one.
In game one during the top of the second inning, the Storm plated the first run of the game on a single to center field. Senior
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) responded by hitting a single that scored Junior
Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) to knot the game at one a piece.
The storm wasted no time adding a pair of run in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Junior
Jack Sahargun (Coto De Caza, Calif./Tesoro) led off the bottom of the third inning with a double. Sophomore
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit a single to bring him in. A few plays later, Moreno scored from third after Junior
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error.
The Scots scored three runs in the fourth inning to make the score 6-3 Macalester. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Francalangia doubled and scored Fried. Sahargun later doubled and tallied an RBI to make the score 8-3. The Scots pitching staff threw two scoreless innings to keep the Storm at bay
In the top of the sixth, after two hit by pitches and a walk, A Storm batter roped a double to score two RBI's. Crown added another run after the Scots pitching staff walked a run in and gave up a single to bring in another runner and make the score 8-7 Macalester. The Scots added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to give them a 9-7 lead.
Crown took advantage of a Macalester error, three walks, and a hit by pitch by sprinkling in four hits at the right time to come away with nine runs in the seventh inning and take a commanding 16-9 lead. The Scots were unable to overcome that big deficit.
Sahargun, Francalangia, and Moreno all had three hits to fuel the Scots offense.
Macalester will head to Tucson, Arizona March 14 to play a series of games over spring break.
