No.6 Bethel Remains Undefeated and Moves Past Macalester

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team was tested by Bethel University, who holds the top spot in the MIAC standings. The Scots fought hard but dropped a road game to the Royals. Macalester falls to 1-18 (0-14 MIAC) while Bethel improves to an unblemished 19-0 (14-0 MIAC).

The Royals jumped out to a 7-0 lead before senior guard Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) drained a three-pointer for the Scots. Bethel then went on another 7-0 run which was stopped by Junior guard Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) going 1-for-2 at the charity stripe to make the score 14-4. The Macalester offense settled in and scored a few more baskets to make the score 20-12 heading into the second quarter.

Junior forward Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) made the first points of the second quarter for the Scots. Bethel found a rhythm offensively and started to separate themselves from Macalester. The Scots trailed 46-24 at the half. With Macalester knowing the team needed to be aggressive to overcome their double-digit deficit, Hull made a free-throw for the first points of the third quarter. Togneri converted another layup to make the score 52-27.  Junior forward Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo,Calif./Sir Francis Drake) hit a jumper late in the third quarter to make the score 54-30.

After taking a 67-30 lead into the fourth quarter, the Royals scored the first basket of the final quarter. Junior guard Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) converted one of her two free-throws to make the score 69-31. The Scots were not able to get much more going offensively throughout the fourth quarter which ultimately led to Bethel winning 82-41.

Podoll carried the load offensively for the Scots, scoring 12 points and adding three offensive rebounds. Junior guard Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard Westlake) totaled eight points, three steals, four rebounds, and one assist on the night.

Macalester will be back in action Wednesday, February 5th at the Leonard Center as the team faces off with St. Catherine University. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
