Women’s Basketball: Macalester Fights Hard but Ultimately Falls Short in Fourth Quarter Comeback

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team nearly completed a comeback over Concordia Moorhead after being down by as much as 17 points late in the third quarter. The Scots lost a tough game to the Cobbers by a score of 71-59 in the Leonard Center. Macalester falls to 1-11 (0-7 MIAC) while Concordia improves to 5-7 (3-4 MIAC).

Senior guard Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./ Blue Valley Northwest) scored the first basket of the night for both teams. After battling back and forth, the Scots took a 12-10 lead with a layup from junior guard Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./ Hopkins). The Cobbers soon went on an 8-2 run to close the first quarter.

Concordia scored five straight points before Macalester answered with a layup from Hull to make the score 23-16 in favor of the Cobbers. The Scots trailed the Cobbers 38-27 entering half time.

After Concordia opened up the scoring for the second half, Macalester answered back with a layup from junior guard Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley Calif./ Tamalpais) to make the score 40-29. The Cobbers jumped out to a 17-point lead, making the score 58-41 into the fourth quarter. The Scots fought hard to erase the deficit by scoring the first points of the fourth quarter. Macalester went on a 14-2 run to make the score 62-54 and cut the Concordia lead to just eight points. Unfortunately, the Cobbers went on a 9-5 run to take down the Scots 71-59. Despite outscoring Concordia 18-13 in the fourth quarter, the Cobbers multiple scoring runs were enough to hold off the fighting Scots.

The Scots were led offensively by junior guard Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./ Harvard-Westlake). Barraza scored 15 points on 5-of-18 shooting from the field. Barraza was also unblemished from the charity stripe, knocking down all three of her attempts. Junior forward Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) contributed 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Hull tallied 10 points on the night on 5-of-11 shooting. Hull also recorded nine rebounds and was one shy of picking up a double-double.

Macalester will continue MIAC play as they travel to Augsburg University to take on the Auggies Saturday, Jan. 11. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
