ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team lost on the road to #18 St. Thomas University. The Scots are now 1-15 (0-11 MIAC) after tonight's loss while St. Thomas improves to 13-3 (9-2 MIAC).
The Tommies jumped out to a 6-0 lead early. Junior guard
Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) scored the first basket for the Scots to make the score 6-2. Later on, junior guard
Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) drained a three pointer to make the score 11-5 in favor of St. Thomas. A made free throw from the Tommies gave the team a 12-5 lead heading into the second quarter. The St. Thomas offense got rolling and went on a 12-0 run before Sophomore guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) made a three-pointer to make the sore 24-8. The Scots entered the half trailing 28-10.
Junior guard
Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./ Harvard-Westlake) made a layup in response to the St. Thomas layup to start the second half. The Scots put together a 17-point third quarter to make the score 47-27 in favor of the Tommies. Sabbagh put the first points on the board in the fourth quarter. Macalester's offense played a much better second half but they were still unable to cut into the deficit while on the road. The final score was St. Thomas 63, Macalester 38.
Sabbagh scored a team high 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Barraza also tallied nine points while adding five rebounds and five assists.
Macalester will host Gustavus Adolphus College in another MIAC game Saturday, January 25, 2020. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
