ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team lost a tough road game to Hamline University after only trailing by four points going into halftime. The Scots fall to 1-13 (0-9 MIAC), while Hamline improves to 9-3 (6-3 MIAC).
On what seemed to be a game of runs, the Pipers jumped out to a 6-0 run before Macalester responded with a layup from Junior guard
Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard Westlake). First year guard Emma Lafrenz (Edina, Minn./ Edina) quickly tied the game at 8 with a strong layup in the paint. After trading baskets, a
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) three pointer from the senior guard put the Scots up 13-10. Shortly after, Hamline score and Macalester took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.
The Pipers struck first in the second quarter to take a 15-13 lead. Sophomore guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) drained two free throws to tie the game at 15. Both teams continued to go back and forth with neither side being able to gain much separation. Hamline took a 32-28 lead into half time.
The Pipers came out of the half and went on a 15-0 run to put the Scots in a 45-28 hole. After about six minutes of play in the third quarter, Barraza ended the Hamline run with a jumper to make the score 45-30. The third quarter ended with Hamline being on top 59-38. Junior forward
Kayla Togneri Ventura, Calif./Ventura) scored five points in the half to provide a bit of a spark for Macalester but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Scots fell to the Pipers 84-55.
The Scots were led by Barraza who finished the game with 16 point on 6-of-15 shooting. First year guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) scored 11 points on the night as well. Hull added nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Junior forward
Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) recorded a team high 11 rebounds while Junior guard
Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tampais) dished out a team leading 7 assists.
Macalester will be back in the Leonard Center Saturday, January 18 to take on St. Olaf. The MIAC game is set for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
