ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball lost both games of their doubleheader against Carleton College today. The Scots lost the first game 5-1 and the second 8-5.
The first game remained scoreless until Carleton scored the first run in the top of the fourth. The Scots answered with a run by senior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) who was sent home off a double by sophomore
Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie).
The Knights then scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead and beat the Scots. Senior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) threw six of the innings in the first game. With one strikeout in the loss, Migacz is now fourth in the MIAC in strikeouts with 87.
After the Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first, Macalester went on to have a four-run inning. Junior Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore )found herself on first after a bunt. Sophomore
Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) was then hit by a pitch and advanced Carpenter. With runners on first and second, the Scots loaded the bases when O'Connor singled. Then Lawhead hit a three-RBI double, advancing to third on the Carleton throw, and the Scots took a 3-2 advantage. Macalester went up 4-2 as the Carleton catcher made an error and allowed Lawhead to advance home.
Into the bottom of the third, first year Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) hit a double to left field. Bergin then scored the Scots fifth run as junior
Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) hit a right-field single. The Knights scored a run in the fourth to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Scots.
In the top of the sixth, Carleton tallied four runs to take the lead 8-5 and the Scots were not able to answer in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) pitched the entire second game with three strikeouts.
The Scots play Tuesday, Apr. 16, against Gustavus Adolphus College at home in St. Paul, Minn.
