Women's Basketball: Scots Roll On Knights

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team beat Carleton College tonight at home 86-78.  Sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) tallied a team-high 23 points in the win.

The Scots were scoreless in the first four minutes in their win over the Knights until sophomore Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) tallied a layup. Then down 13-12 with four minutes left to play the Scots began to build a lead. A three-pointer from Barraza took the Scots up 15-13. Followed by a layup from junior Caitlyn Burmester (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and a three-pointer by Swift, the Scots lead jumped to five points.

Into the second quarter, Macalester continued to hold a solid lead. Out of the break and up 20-18, sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) made a shot from beyond the arc. After a turnover by the Knights,  junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) found the basket with a layup in the paint and the Scots led 25-18. The Scots led the rest of the eight minutes left in the quarter, with their lead as large as 11 points with a minute to play.

Up 42-34 out of halftime, Podoll made a layup to start the third quarter for the Scots. Podoll had 14 points and two steals on the night. The Scots led the entire third quarter with their largest lead of 14 points. A layup from sophomore Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) off the bench brought Macalester to 56-42 with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.

The Scots offense was spurred by their bench which tallied 26 points on the night.

Macalester again led the whole fourth quarter and at 3:31 lead 75-59, 16 points up on the Knights. However, Carleton pushed for a comeback as they chipped away at the gap to just five points with a minute to play.

Macalester, who shot an overall 80 percent from the free throw line,  went almost perfect from the line, seven for eight, in the final stretch and saw the game through to beat the Knights.

The Scots stay at home on Saturday, Feb. 9, against Saint Mary's University at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
