NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team picked up its second victory in a row with a 60-57 win at Carleton Wednesday evening at Carleton's West Gym. The night was highlighted by senior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) scoring the 1,000th point of his collegiate career.
The teams battled in the first half, with eight ties and neither team leading by more than four points. A three-pointer by Joe Thursby late in the half put Carleton ahead, 24-21. Sophomore center
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) answered with a three on the next possession, and the half ended in a 24-24 tie.
Carleton (6-16, 4-13 MIAC) opened the second half with a 9-2 run, including seven points from Kent Hanson, to build a 33-26 lead with 16:36 to play. Ferm's milestone came at a key point in the game, as his jumper with 16 minutes left gave him 1,000 career points and started a 6-0 run for Macalester to make it a one-point deficit, 33-32. The lead flip-flopped four times after that, with the Knights eventually taking a 46-45 edge with 5:26 remaining.
The Scots briefly regained the upper hand, with Ferm scoring four of Macalester's five consecutive points for a 50-46 advantage. But Carleton tied the game on a basket and two free throws, making the score 50-50 with 3:39 left. Over the next 2:46, the Scots held the Knights scoreless in four possessions while hitting six free throws to take their largest lead of the game, 56-50 with 1:11 on the clock. A 7-2 Carleton run narrowed the gap to one, 58-57 with nine seconds left, but sophomore guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) made two free throws and the Knights missed a late three to end the game. The win snaps a seven-game losing streak to Carleton and gives the Scots a second straight MIAC victory.
Henningfield led Macalester with 21 points while making five threes in a game for the second time this season. Ferm tallied 13 of his 19 points in the second half and grabbed seven rebounds to give him 500 for his career. He is the 22nd Scot to score 1,000 points in a career and the first since
Kareem Ismail '17 and
Dylan Kilgore '17 both achieved the milestone in the first game of the 2016-17 season. Hanson paced the Knights with 25 points.
Macalester (6-17, 3-15 MIAC) continues conference play with a home game against Saint Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Scots will honor their seniors prior to the game, which starts at 3:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
