ST. PAUL, Minn. – In his final game as a Scot, senior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) racked up 32 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and three blocks to lead the Macalester College men's basketball team to an 83-77 victory over Augsburg University Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The win came in the final game of the season for the Scots, who close out the year with a 7-18 overall record and a 4-16 mark in the MIAC.
Late in the first half, Macalester outscored the Auggies (17-7, 13-6 MIAC) 17-6 to take a commanding 38-29 advantage with 3:41 on the clock. Ferm started the stretch with a pair of threes and a dunk, while first year guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) scored five points. Augsburg closed out the period with a 7-1 run to make the halftime score 39-36 Scots.
Sathy opened the second half with a three-pointer and sophomore center
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) added a layup to put Macalester on top, 44-36. Augsburg responded with 10 straight points, including a three and a layup by Booker Coplin, to take a 46-44 edge with 15:27 to play. The Scots counter-punched with a 9-0 run to regain the lead, 53-46. The Auggies came within three points, but Macalester reeled off a definitive 17-7 spree that saw the home team make 9-of-10 from the free throw line en route to a 71-58 bulge with five minutes remaining.
Back-to-back threes from Coplin and Matt Carik helped Augsburg get as close as three points twice in the game's final minute. But the Scots would not be denied their third win in four games, as the team made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to beat the third-place Auggies. Macalester held Augsburg to 38.2 percent shooting from the field in the second half while making 54.5 percent of its field goal attempts after halftime.
Ferm was 8-of-16 from the field, 5-of-7 from three-point range and 8-of-10 from the line to finish with a season-best 32 points. His 17 rebounds are a career high, with 16 boards coming on the defensive end. Henningfield contributed 24 points and nine rebounds, while Sathy tallied a career-best 18 points while making 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Junior guard
Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) dished out eight assists in the win. Coplin, who leads the MIAC in scoring and ranks third nationally averaging 26.3 points per game, led Augsburg with 26 points.
The upset win also marked the final game for seniors Ferm, guards
Carl Salvino (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and
Andrew Smith (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine), and student assistant
Isaac Siegel (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional). The Scots return four starters and a total of 14 players for next year.
