ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team lost a MIAC game against Hamline University, 84-52 Tuesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while the Pipers improve to 4-1, 1-1 MIAC.
Macalester got off to a slow start, missing its first seven field goal attempts and committing five turnovers, as Hamline jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Junior guard
Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) scored five points in the first quarter, including a three-pointer, but the Scots trailed 28-8 at the end of the quarter. The Pipers increased their lead to 26, 42-16 in the second quarter before the Scots tallied the final 10 points of the half to make the score 42-26 at the break. Junior guard
Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) hit a pair of threes, and Swift and first year forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) each made baskets in the run.
In the third quarter, Hamline outscored Macalester 21-15 to ease the lead up to 22, 63-41. In the fourth, the Pipers put the game out of reach by starting the quarter with 18 straight points for a commanding 81-41 advantage. Hamline shot 54.7 percent from the field for the game compared to 31.0 percent for the Scots.
Sophomore guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) registered 14 points and six rebounds to lead Macalester in both categories. Barraza finished with 10 points and three steals, while junior guard
Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) tallied seven points, seven assists, two steals and two blocks. Reilly Geistfeld paced the Pipers with 25 points and 15 rebounds.
The Scots travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Colorado College on Nov. 29 and 30. Macalester faces Johnson & Wales on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Central before taking on the host Tigers on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Central.
