Baseball: Shogren, Low Help Macalester Earn Split at Saint John’s

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Junior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) homered for the second day in a row, as the Macalester College baseball team beat Saint John's University, 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Becker Park. The Scots, who fell 10-2 in the second game, are now 14-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Johnnies are 17-5, 3-3 MIAC.

Despite playing at Saint John's home field, Macalester was the home team since the games were originally scheduled to be played at Nicholson Field.

With Macalester trailing, 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1, senior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) hit a two-out single. Low, who homered against Hamline at Becker Park on Saturday, stepped up and blasted his team-leading fifth home run of the season to give the Scots a 3-2 lead. Junior Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) retired the Johnnies in order in the top of the seventh to wrap up his first complete-game victory as a Scot. Shogren held Saint John's to two runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking two in seven strong innings. Senior Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) had two hits, and senior Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) drove in a run in the bottom of the third inning.

In the second game, Macalester answered a Johnnies' run in the top of the first with a run on a grounder by Castagnetti that plated Brantner in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 1-1. Saint John's took control of the game with three runs in the third and four more in the fifth for a commanding 8-1 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, Castagnetti came home on a single by first year Cooper Jensen (Washington, D.C./The Field School). But that's all the offense the Scots would generate, as the Johnnies tacked on a couple runs in the sixth for a 10-2 win. First year Andrew Polk (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) started and pitched 4 2/3 innings in the loss, while first year Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Macalester will play its third MIAC doubleheader in three days at Becker Park on Monday, Apr. 23 against Bethel University, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
