Football: Macalester Loses at Lake Forest, 41-26

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Macalester College football team stumbled on the road against Lake Forest College, losing 41-26 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Farwell Field. The Scots fall to 2-2 overall, while the Foresters remain unbeaten at 4-0 on the season.

After Lake Forest scored touchdowns on two of their first three possessions to lead 13-0, Macalester got on the board early in the second quarter. Senior Christian Adams (Alexandria, La./Pineville) connected with junior receiver Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) on a 34-yard touchdown pass. The field was shortened by a 51-yard kickoff return from junior receiver Jonathan Knee (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) that allowed the Scots to start at the Foresters' 44-yard line.

Lake Forest answered on the next possession with a 69-yard drive that ended with Jagan Cleary's third touchdown pass of the day, a 5-yarder to Chris Edomwande for a 21-7 edge. Macalester went on a 79-yard drive that included a 34-yard pass from Adams to junior running back Jeremy Stephan (Duluth, Minn./Marshall). Senior Sam Bordo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Adams for the score and a 21-13 deficit. Before the half ended, the Foresters were able to find the end zone on a 17-yard run by Cleary that punctuated a 58-yard drive and made the score 28-13.

Another Foresters' touchdown midway through the third quarter following an interception pushed the lead to 34-13. The Scots responded with a 10-play, 74-yard drive as junior receiver Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) ran it in from one yard out. Senior running back Matthew Bonazzoli (Swampscott, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) brought it to the 1-yard line with a 24-yard run.

Early in the fourth quarter, Macalester was able to pull to within one touchdown after a 1-yard run by Stephan capped an 81-yard drive that made the score 34-26. But Lake Forest marched 75 yards on its next possession and scored on a 17-yard run by Joey Valdivia to extend the lead to 41-26. The Scots came up empty on their next drive, and the Foresters ran out the final 7:04 to clinch the win.

Adams completed 28-of-47 with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Bordo and junior receiver Jack Streibich (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish) each caught seven passes, while Beatty had five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Stephan and Bonazzoli both ran for 45 yards apiece.

On defense, senior defensive back Cash McGregor (Wasilla, Alaska/Wasilla) made 13 tackles and had an interception, while senior linebacker Phil Wettersten (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) recorded 11 tackles. Valdivia, an All-American in 2016, rushed 41 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while Cleary was 31-of-40 for 337 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
