ST. PAUL, Minn. – A pair of goals by senior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) lifted the Macalester College men's soccer team past UW-Whitewater, 2-1 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The win evens the Scots' record at 2-2, while the Warhawks fall to 3-2.
A little over seven minutes into the game, senior forward
Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) was fouled in the UW-Whitewater penalty area. Burke stepped up and placed a shot into the left side of the goal to put Macalester on top, 1-0. The Warhawks pulled even in the 22nd minute, when Peter Raymonds tucked the ball just inside the left post for the tying goal.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 into the second half until Burke emerged again. Junior defender
Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) dribbled down the left side and sent the ball in to Burke, who beat Warhawks' goalkeeper Chris Lucatorto from about 15 yards out. The goal proved to be Burke's fourth game-winner of his career.
The Scots dominated possession and out-shot UW-Whitewater, 18-4. Junior goalkeeper
Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) made two saves in the win, while Lucatorto had six saves for the Warhawks.
Macalester begins MIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 13 against Hamline at home. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
