ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team fell to St. Catherin University, 10-1 and 5-1 in a MIAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at St. Kate's Field. The Scots are now 18-20 overall and 6-14 in league play, while the Wildcats improve to 24-10, 12-4 MIAC.
In the first game, St. Catherine scored four runs in the first inning, another in the second and five more in the third to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Junior
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) drove in a run with a bunt single in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the game beyond five innings. Gunther and first year
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) had the only hits off the Wildcats' pitching.
Macalester started Game 2 much better, as Carpenter reached on an error, stole second and third, and eventually scored on a single by first year
Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield). But the Scots didn't advance anyone past first base the rest of the way, as St. Catherine scored a run in the bottom of the first and pushed two runs across in both the third and fifth innings. Carpenter and Jackson registered Macalester's lone hits off Maddie Greer, who pitched a complete game for the Wildcats.
The Scots conclude the 2017 season with a conference doubleheader against St. Olaf College on Sunday, Apr. 30. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Macalester Softball Complex.
