ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split a MIAC doubleheader with Saint Mary's University, losing the first game, 6-2 before winning Game 2, 2-0 Friday afternoon at the Macalester Softball Complex. The Scots are now 17-13 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while the Cardinals are 8-21, 2-11 MIAC.
In the first game, Macalester answered two Saint Mary's runs in the top of the first inning with a run in the bottom of the first. First year
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) led off with a single, stole second and came home on a single by first year
Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield). After the Cardinals added a run in the top of the fourth, first year
Kai Perket (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) scored from third on an error in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 3-2. Saint Mary's extended its lead with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to pull away, 6-2.
The Scots managed four hits off Cardinals pitcher Ashley Betzold, who didn't allow a runner past first base in the final two innings. Jackson, Carpenter, junior
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) and sophomore
Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont./Loyola Sacred Heart) had the Macalester hits.
The Scots started the second game as they did the first, with Jackson driving home Carpenter in the bottom of the first inning. The hit extended Jackson's RBI streak to six games. Then in the fourth, Resner came through with a two-out single that plated Bean and gave Macalester a 2-0 lead. Bean did the rest in the circle, shutting out the Cardinals on five hits while striking out two and walking none in seven innings. Junior
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) led the offense with two of the Scots' six hits.
Macalester returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 18 with another MIAC twinbill against St. Thomas. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Macalester Softball Complex.
